"Waterways of War" Tour in Lake George, NY (2 HOURS)
Here is what you will experience and learn about...
•King Hendricks & Sir William Johnston Monument pays tribute to two men from different backgrounds (British officer and Native American Chief) who fought side by side to defeat the advancing French armies. Learn about the Battle of Lake George in 1755.
•Siege of Fort William Henry Battlefield a 35-acre state-owned park which was the site of several key military battles between the British and French Armies from 1755 to 1758.
•Fort William Henry, perhaps most remembered due to its inclusion in James Fenimore Cooper's fictional novel, The Last of the Mohicans. British held Fort William Henry fell to the French in August 1757. Exterior tour only.
•Historic Shipwreck sites/information- learn about the submerged fleet of 1758 and the British Radeau "Land Tortoise" ship discovered in 1990. The Radeau is the oldest intact warship in North America. While only able to be actually visited underwater by certified divers- information will be revealed about Lake George's unique "Underwater Blue Trail" of history. Learn about the role of the non-profit Batteau Below Preservation Society today that is still discovering new underwater historic artifacts.
•French Army Artillery Lines French Commander the Marquis de Montcalm chose strategic locations to brace his army of cannon and artillery men in order to bombard Fort William Henry. Learn about the techniques and strategies required for firing an 18th Century cannon, and use a spyglass for yourself to see the same view that Montcalm had as he planned his attack.
•Colonial Gravesites while all of the locations of buried soldiers will never be known, there have been some graves located and other memorials commemorated. Learn about stories of ghosts who may still walk the fields and marshes from the Bloody Morning Scout ambush of 1755, the famous Siege of Fort William Henry in 1757 or the military hospital at Fort George in 1777.
•Fort George Ruins located in a protected state park, this was the site of the "Battle of Lake George" in September 1755 where Colonel William Johnson defeated a force of French and their Native American allies under Baron Dieskau. Later a fortified fort was begun, never to be finished but some of its ruins still remain for us to tour. The site also served as a miliary hospital during the American Revolutionary War.
•Lake George as a strategic highway-- visitors today access the Lake George and Adirondack region via major interstate highways. In Colonial times, waterways were the superhighways. Learn how strategic island vantage points, sheer cliffs and Lake George itself proved to be key elements in military domination and struggles.
•Father Isaac Jogues Statue--the first white man, a Jesuit Missionary Priest, who saw Lake George in 1646 and christened it Lac du Saint Sacrement meaning "The Lake of the Blessed Sacrement". Learn about his struggles to bring Christianity to the Native Peoples.
